5 eco-friendly household swaps – part 3

Our main ethos as a house clearance company is being kind to the environment. As a business, we undertake house clearances through Cirencester and other areas of Gloucestershire. But no matter which location, most people choose us due to our sensitive approach and strong focus on the environment. This is something which is very close to our hearts.

Through our many years in the industry, we’ve realised that some people don’t want to make daily eco-friendly changes because they think it will difficult, expensive and pointless. Over our last few blog posts, we’ve illustrated exactly how easy it is to make simple, long-term eco-friendly changes to your household. Sticking to our promise of bringing you more ideas, here are some more easy changes you can make.

1) Swap plastic food bags for reusable ones

As we’re sure you’re aware, plastic is currently filling our landfill/oceans and it’s so unhealthy for the environment. Consider switching your one-use plastic food bags for reusable food wraps, or even a lunch box! If you take a sandwich to work 5 days a week for 48 weeks of the year, that’s 240 instances of plastic per year that you’re preventing from harming the environment.

2) Swap napkins for reusable cloths

We’ve all been there; children’s parties, Sunday lunches, Christmas dinners; dish out some paper napkins and dispose of them later, simple! Rather than throwing away napkins that are going to be harmful to the planet, invest in some reusable cloths that you can wash and avoid throwing away. They look nicer and you’ll save money too!

3) Buy items in bulk

It’s inevitable, it would be quite an effort to avoid all instances of single-use plastic – though we may try. When you do buy these items, it’s a great idea to buy them in bulk because the individual packaging is actually reduced when you purchase products this way.

4) Swap ready meals for homemade cooking

We’re sure that most people have had a ‘microwave meal’ phase at some point in their lives. Whether it’s the full meal, or just a bag of seasoned potatoes, all of that plastic adds up. Buying raw ingredients and having a go at making your favourite ready meals/snacks it a fantastic way of saving on plastic. You’ll get more for your money with extra vegetables for an additional meal and your overall packaging consumption will decrease. Plus, as you can control what’s going into your meal, you have the option to make it healthier… which is an added benefit.

5) Swap your plastic toothbrush for a more sustainable one

The US reports to throw away over a billion toothbrushes per year. Just think of all the plastic that’s making itself at home in each landfill site. Swapping to a more environmentally friendly toothbrush is a good way to stop contributing to this.

We aren’t talking about a radical change. Using a toothbrush which you can replace its head can make a big difference. Or even switching to bamboo brush can help.

You may be as passionate about the environment us, or you may be trying your hardest to start making more of an effort. Regardless of where you sit on the environmentally friendly scale, the most important thing is that you’re here, reading this article in the hope of making a difference.
